US PET sector makes major push for tariffs, citing crisis in recycling
The U.S. virgin PET resin and recycling industries are pressing hard for tariffs and other restrictions on imports from President Donald Trump’s administration, arguing that they’re needed to shore up a recycling sector in crisis.
At least half a dozen industry organizations, including the National Association for PET Container Resources, the Association of Plastic Recyclers and the PET Resin Association, want the material included in a new Trump administration investigation of global manufacturing overcapacity.
The requests are not entirely unexpected. Some of the groups have forcefully advocated recently for tariffs or measures like traceability systems to verify that recycled PET comes from U.S. sources.
And there are indications they may get a sympathetic reception.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer had specifically noted concerns about PET resin in the March 11 announcement of the administration’s Section 301 investigation of structural excess manufacturing capacity in 15 countries and the European Union.
Still, the PET manufacturing chain made a concerted push ahead of an April 15 deadline the Trump administration set to ask for input on the Section 301 review.
Other groups weighing in to USTR included the PET Coalition, The Recycling Partnership and the National Waste & Recycling Association.
